We have a notice in all rooms informing the customers if there is any signs of smoking in the rooms they will be charged a cleaning fee of $400 and we also have a sign telling them the information listed below.
        .
The smoke detectors in this unit are very sensitive and smoking can set them off. They are hard wired into the mains with a battery back-up. Removing the battery will not shut down the fire alarm and may result in setting the alarm off. Doing so will automatically send an alarm to the fire brigade listing your unit as the outbreak of the fire. The fire brigade have a call out fee of $500 for false alarms that will also be added to your account.
        .
It seems to work but we still get the odd one that smokes and we have charged the $400 a few times now.
Ps our smoke detectors are not monitored by the fire brigade but it sounds good.

If we smell guests that have been smoking when checking in, we make sure to tell them loud and clear that no smoking in the rooms is allowed.

Not sure about the solution regarding smoke inside a room. At check in our motel rules are displayed, a copy is also in each room. One of the rules applies to smoking inside, where a minimum cleaning fee of $200 applies to offenders. As we have most guests C.Card details , they are aware of what can happen. Over a period of time we have found that the possibility of the fee being applied is the main reason that most guests who are smokers, do not smoke inside.

We too have advertised a $300 Cleaning surcharge if smoking in the room has been detected, we have charged it a few times , but have lately found that many people do not have enough credit on their credit card to charge the fee, then we have lost out. we have signs in all rooms, printed on our check in sheets, printed on the 1st page of our room compendium and also on our website under terms and conditions, yet we still get them. We are seriously thinking of becoming a smoke free motel and banning smoking from the whole property (but we do like to eat, so may have to rethink this policy)

We printed up no smoking signs stating that “$300 will be added to your account if smoking is detected in the room”. Needless to say that we have not had a problem since.
